| When you first visit the practice, your osteopath will ask you a number of questions in the form of a case history and general health.
Your Osteopath will then examine the area of pain using specialised osteopathic techniques and other more conventional medical assessment. Osteopaths use their hands both to investigate the underlying causes of pain and to carry out treatment. In order to do this properly it may be necessary to remove some clothing; many people bring in shorts or wear light clothing for examination and treatment.
After a diagnosis has been made and explained to you, your osteopath will discuss with you your diagnosis and treatment plan, its likely time scale and probable outcome. Your Osteopath will then move on to treatment using manipulation and massage of the affected bones/joints, muscles and other related tissues. You will be given treatment on your first visit unless it is felt that your complaint is inappropriate for osteopathic treatment, in which case the Osteopath will discuss with you the best course of action. Each consultation and treatment normally lasts up to 30 minutes.
Osteopathy is patient centred, which means the type and method of treatment is specific to you and your own individual condition. Your Osteopath may also suggest exercises or modification to your posture or lifestyle with the aim of helping the underlying problems and not just the symptoms
